Looking at stress from a biblical perspective, Haymon lets us know that stress can be good or bad; its nature can be intense and encompassing, and we have to find the right outlet for relief to whatever is causing the stress in the first place. The sad thing about handling stress is that oftentimes many people go about it the wrong way and thus exhibit various negative behaviors such as: (1) addictions: gambling, alcohol, drugs, sex, pornography; (2) physical illnesses: cancer, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer's, pneumonia, immune deficiency, viral infections, susceptibility to bacteria and germs; and (3) mood disorders: major depression, bipolar/mania disorder, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder.
Dr. Haymon writes in his book: "When we are stressed or overwhelmed we need to experience God's peace. It is what we have searched for since the beginning of time. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to fabricate or conjure it. It is a gift that only He can give."
Through the pages of Stress: Climbing Out of Its Pits with God, Dr. Haymon provides us with positive coping mechanisms to help us feel better about ourselves, others, God and situations we encounter each day to live a productive life.
In 1969, he was drafted into the military during the Vietnam War period. He did a small tour of duty, but upon release, advancing his education became important to him. He graduated with a BA from Harris Teachers' College of St. Louis, Missouri in 1973. He later graduated from St. Louis University with a Master of Social Work in 1976. He completed his Doctorate in Educational Psychology, ED.D, from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1994.
In 1994-1995, God allowed him to have a debilitating experience. It served as an epiphany for him to seek God with everything he had. This experience precipitated in him the sincere desire to do the will of the Lord and also increase his studies in Christian education by attending the Bethesda Temple Bible Institute. As a result of the leading of the Lord through his life experiences and his private practice, God gave him the book, Stress: Climbing Out of Its Pits with God, along with a workbook and study guide.
