Looking at stress from a biblical perspective, Dr. Haymon lets us know
that stress can be good or bad; its nature can be intense and
encompassing, and we have to find the right outlet for relief to
whatever is causing the stress in the first place. The sad thing about
handling stress is that many go about it the wrong way and thus exhibit
various negative behaviors such as: (1) addictions: gambling, alcohol,
drugs, sex, and pornography; (2) physical illnesses: cancer, heart
attacks, strokes, Alzheimer's, pneumonia, immune deficiency, viral
infections, and susceptibility to certain forms of bacteria and germs;
and (3) mood disorders: major depression, bipolar/mania disorder,
postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder.
Haymon gives us an understanding of stress, how it affects our relationship with God and with others, and how we can handle it in a positive way to live the healthy life God wants us to live.
Dr.
Haymon writes: "When we are stressed or overwhelmed we need to
experience God's peace. It is what we have searched for since the
beginning of time. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to
fabricate or conjure it. It is a gift that only He can give."
Through
the pages of Stress: Climbing out of its Pits with God, Dr. Haymon
provides us with positive coping mechanisms to help us feel better
about ourselves, about others, about God, and about situations we
encounter each day to live a productive and successful life.
